Detour Drive home

This morning when we got up we took down the tent, packed up the bags, and got things ready to head home. We decided there was no rush to get home. We went to see some petroglyphs that were near our campgrounds. We left from there to head home and decided not to go back into Arches to just head for home.

So we got on the road and we saw a sign for Green River State Park. It said to take the next exit, so we did. After we were off the exit there weren't any signs telling us where to go so we just drove through town. We were on a business loop so we figured it would get up back to the freeway if nothing else. We were almost through Green River when all of a sudden we noticed another brown sign that pointed that Green River State Park turn left NOW. So we turned and Spencer was just about to say he didn't think we were going the right way when we saw an entrance to the park. It was a nice little area. We walked around, wandered down the dock, checked out the water, then got back on the road.


The next city we decided to detour into was Price. We again took the business loop and as we were driving through town we saw a map in a courtyard with a bunch of monuments. It turned out the be the CEU Prehistoric Museum. We didn't go to the museum, just wandered around looking at the monuments and the map of Price. As we were headed back to the car Spencer saw the steeples on an old church that we could see a few blocks away. I LOVE beautiful old churches so we decided to go check that out too.

It ended up being this amazing Greek Orthodox church that is actually listed on the Utah Historical Registry. It was a beautiful building.

As we went to go back to Main Street (the business loop) Spencer decided to go straight through the intersection instead of turning and we saw this building that we thought looked cool so we went over to check it out.

Turns out it was a Masonic Temple. After the Masonic temple we finally got back to the business loop and on our way again.

Again as we were driving down the freeway we saw a sign for "Historic Helper Main street." We decided we might as well check it out too. It was a nice little town. We were almost out of town and we saw the library. The library was cool, it was full stone with rounded corners, then we saw a HUGE statue of a miner out front. So we HAD to go check it out.



Then, just after Helper there are 3 historic marker off the side of the road. We weren't planning to stop at historic markers, but I wanted to know what they said. They were really neat there was one about the energy plant (off to the right in the first picture) that burns coal to provide power for about 300,000 customers. The second marker was about the horrible mine collapse where 171 miners were killed, it was so sad. The third marker was about the coal industry in carbon county.

There was one last stop that we couldn't quite make the pull out, there is a cemetery called the Mill Fork Cemetery. It's right off Highway 6 in this remote location and it's so peculiar. I have always wanted to stop, and we were planning to, but it was a dirt road and we didn't see it until we were almost past it and we had cars behind us so we couldn't make the turn in time. . .just gives us some place new to stop next time.
